Getty Museum Expansion Plan

Published by admin on

A lawsuit was filed in Superior Court on January 18, 2000, by the
coalition known as Pacific Coast Homeowners, (PPRA, Castellammare
Mesa Home Owners Association, Pacific View Estates Homeowners
Association and Sunset Mesa Property Owners Association) challenging
the city’s approval of the museum’s expansion plan. On March 29,
Superior Court Judge Dzintra Janavs rejected a request by the Getty Trust
attorneys that the CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) cause of
action be dismissed. The court ruled on the contrary by stating that the
Getty filed its notice of determination (NOD) 5 days prematurely and that
the PCH suit was filed within the statutory time period allowed by law.
Judge Janavs denied a motion for reconsideration of the above ruling at a
May 1, 2000 hearing. PPRA received notice on May 15 that the Getty
attorneys filed an appeal of this denial.
Our friend and land use consultant, Rubell Helgeson, continually
stated that the zoning laws and municipal codes of the city of Los
Angeles must be upheld and that this approval of the expansion plans
by the city “flies in the face of good land use principles”. Please help
support the continuation of Rubell’s legacy to protect and preserve the
environment by sending in your tax-deductible contribution to PPRA
(memo/Getty legal fund) to help defray the cost of this legal challenge.
