Palisades Feels like a Village
When you drive along Sunset Boulevard through the Palisades, you can still see the mountains, the sky and the scenery. But most of all you feel at home because the Palisades still give you that “village” feeling. Rubell Helgeson helped make it possible. She fought for a community plan that limited the height of buildings and was responsible for more thoughtful, planned development. She fought forthe upholding of the municipal codes and zoning laws of the city of Los Angeles. She was instrumental in reducing the planned density of the Palisades Highlands by two-thirds with a lawsuit filed by PPRA when she was president. If the Highlands look overcrowdedto you now, just image how it would feel with condominiums that would have increased the population by two-thirds. A secondary access would have been required through Lachman Lane and Bienveneda onto congested Sunset Boulevard. Last, but not least, Rubell fought for what she loved dearly – open space and public parks. The fact that Temescal Canyon Park is a public park today instead of the continuation of urban sprawl is one of her many legacies.
